I have been researching on and off for almost 6 months trying to find the “perfect” tv that will fit my needs and my pocketbook. I have reviewed the technical details and the specifications of numerous tvs and had narrowed the search down to the Samsung LN46B630 and the Phillips 47 PFL6704D. I had decided on the Samsung and went to my local Sam’s Club to buy it when the manager of the electronics area, told me they had a rash of returns on the Samsungs over the last month.

I had no reason not to switch as both units were at the top of my list, but after making my decision and purchasing the Phillips and using it for 10 days, I know I made the right decision.

Arriving home with the TV my wife assisted me in removing it from the box. This task is made very easy by the clever design of the box. It is a two person job. Do not try it by yourself as you are likely to tip it over and damage the TV. The next day, the Direct TV guy came and installed our dish and hooked up the tv. He hooked up the tv and couldn’t believe the tv didn’t appear to need any adjustment right out of the box. He also couldn’t believe how effective the matte screen reduced the amount of reflection nearly to zero.

I have only had one LCD TV and that was a 26inch Vizio in my RV. It seemed to take forever to get that adjusted for acceptable color etc. The Phillips seemed to need no adjustment so I thought I would wait for a few days before making any adjustments. The PFL670 is a 120 Hz so one sees no “judder” and its 2 ms response time is so fast you don’t have ANY lag time or jerky movements during fast action scenes. The colors are bright and vivid it kind of reminded me of when I got new glasses my entire world brightened up. So it is with the Phillips TV. I have a friend who is a TV tech at a national electronics store coming over tomorrow. He told me he will be glad to make any adjustments since they don’t sell Phillips at his store. He wants to be able to compare it to the Samsung and other models they do sell. He was very skeptical that the set would be “IN TUNE” right out of the box. If possible, I will come back and make additions and corrections to this review when he has completed his “tune up”. In summary, my wife and I are both pleased beyond belief that we found a TV that meets all our needs including the lack of reflections by the matte screen. We wish that all our decisions would work out this well.

I want to add, that I don’t think it fair that people mark a TV up or down with delivery issues. The delivery has nothing to do with the product and it’s performance. Delivery is a separate issue. I rate the Phillips soley on it performance and its specs. I try to compare it to other products and their specs. When a product does not meet its specs it should be downgraded in the review. In the case of this particular Phillips TV, in my opinion, this model meets or exceeds all the specs. The contrast issue of 50K to 1 with this model is reduced by the matt screen. If you have a glossy screen you will have a sharper black. However, with a matte screen and a setting with the potential for reflection, our living room with a walk thru patio door, we were more concerned with reflection than we were with sharper blacks. After all, 50K is right up there with the best of them regardless of the matte screen.

Very good for the money – Solomon70 –
The TV arrived with a defective remote control but a call to Philips got a new one on the way and it arrived quickly. Once the remote issue was resolved, the setup was fast and easy and the picture quality is great. Once the filters were setup, the sound is very good but best sound will be obtained with a good set of external speakers. The TV ships in a mode that requires the remote in order to enter the setup mode and if I had not been able to make a temporary repair, the entire set would have been returned as defective because of a five cent switch being stuck in the closed position. That being said, I am very well pleased with the TV and would buy another one if I needed it. I was well pleased with the way Philips responded to the warranty coverage. The agent was polite, helpful and very capable and the replacement remote arrived in two business days.

lovely LCD TV – Charles – Texas, USA
Nice picture when judged side-by-side to a Samsung 40″ (the Samsung was rated the #1 value by Consumer Reports) perhaps not a saturated but one could likely adjust it if so desired to have more “pop”. Seems to be more susceptible to horizontal judder than the Samsung. Pretty cheap for a screen this big. Paid significantly more for the 40″ just one year ago. Odd remote, but it works well and is easy to program if you hold your tongue correctly!

I am extremely happy with this TV.
it says on a lot of sites that this TV has an 8ms response time, but when you look in the owners manual it says its 5ms.

I think watching SDTV on this TV is great. I work for the cable company, and that being said, I have seen A LOT of pricey/cheap whatever price range of TV, look like crap when it comes to standard def programing. its not really something you want to see after spending X amount of dollars on a new TV. this one pulls it off very well.
honestly its not spectacular, but it pulls it off very well.(and I have it in my bedroom sitting 5ft or less away from it)

I also have an upscalling DVD player(samsung) works great with it. but not ALL movies I watch get put into 1080P. like, I put in AC/DC Live at the Donington today, and it looks a little worse than my cable SD. but that’s ok with me. I put in Batman: the Dark Knight. it looks F-ing amazing. I also checked out a couple other movies like Kung-Fu Panda and The Simpsons movie: they look great too.

as for games, I really have only played GTA:IV on it once and I was playing it with the AV cables rather than the HDMI/component(whatever 360 uses) and it looked ok. looked better on my SD tube tv than it does on this TV, but I am hoping to get the HD cables for my 360 soon.
if I am able to update this later, I will.

and for the HDTV: its great. picture looks better than it does in the store.
its too bad I only get 1080i off of cable, but it still looks amazing.
this TV is just flat out amazing for the price. this is worth more than I payed for sure.

now as for the title “be carefull what they give you in the store”
the model I asked for at the store (which was the TV I REALLY wanted was the 42pfl7403d) that one had the computer connection that I wanted on the back, 120Hz, 2ms response time, and 30W audio output. which is what I really wanted for the sports, action movies, and high speed games.
but honestly the 42pfl3603d is just perfect already, other than the computer connection I wanted.

there is no blurring when it comes to fast picture.
I love this TV. its great.

**UPDATE**
I picked up component cables for my 360 yesterday after I wrote this review.
after I plugged it in and checked it out, looked a little better, but still a little crappy. but after a few setting changes on the 360 and TV itself, it looked great. just as good as I thought it was going to be.
(I tested out GTA4 at full 1080p)
**UPDATE**
I have only had this TV for about a month at this point.
several white (large) dots have shown up randomly. I counted about 39 messed up pixels. they come and go, seems to show up more when I am watching HD. after about 20 minutes they may go back to normal and come back 20 minutes later. very annoying, I am returning this TV and getting a Samsung.

Broken after 6-month and Philips refures the service. Do NOT touch !!! – Kiet Pham – San Jose, CA
We bought this 42″ LCD Philips TV at Target 6-month ago. The model number is 42PFL3603D/27. The TV was working fine. It delivers good HD pictures and sound, but it broke down after 6-month of usage. The TV could not display the picture, but sound is still available. When TV is on, all we can see on the screen is the vertical stripes. The catalog calls out that this model is warranted for 1-year from the date of purchase at page EN41 of TV catalog.

Then we called to complain to Philips Consumer Lifestyle. Philips sent the contract service to our place to physically look at the TV. The final decision was “crack screen by damage and it is not covered under warrantee”. This is actual false statement since we did NOT do anything related to the damage of our 6-month old TV.

The cause of this issue is NOT from impact damage. If there were an impact from outside (by us), the screen surface could have shown scratch, dent or impression. The outside surface is now pristine, smooth and showing no impact from outside whatsoever.

Bottom line: Philips is failure to honor service under the terms of warrantees to avoid replacement cost for defective TV. If you plan to use this LCD TV for more than 6 months, my advice is “DO NOT TOUCH THIS PRODUCT”

It was good for about 5 days – Anthony J. Austin – Tacoma, WA
Maybe I got a bad tv, but I don’t know. All I’ve heard about these things is good things, but mine has been anything but. Right away I noticed this horrible fuzz sound, it would just happen, with no rhyme or reason, and I’d have to turn the tv off and back on to fix it. After a month or so of haggling I finally got that fixed. After getting the new board put in and turning the tv on the picture was very dim, and there has been nothing we can do to fix it, and like usual Philips is taking their sweet time doing anything about it. Oh well, maybe sometime this year it’ll be fixed, but so far the problem has spanned 2 years, since it started right after I got it in November, and it’s January and it’s still not fixed. My warranty is only good for a year, so hopefully it’s fixed before that anyway. All I can say is be cautious about what you buy, and keep all the boxes and packaging, cause you may have to return it. And don’t trust the company when they say they’ll make it right, cause they don’t care, it’s not their tv afterall, they just work there.

# Buy Philips 32PFL6704D/F7 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV 32PFL6704D/F7

Purchased my Philips HDTV at my local Costo store in Anchorage , Alaska yesterday for 9 with a extended three year warrantee because we used our AX credit card . Set it up yesterday and it pretty much went as the other two reviews said . Other friends who purchased HDTVs lately suggested that we allow for a couple week burn – in period before fine tuning our set . And the set this morning is still running fine . What was curious when we paid for it at the checkout stand was the clerk said to save the original box for a month or so because their local Costco store had been getting a lot of Vizio’s back lately .

Am now looking at Philips DVD VHS combo players to hook up to this set later . Prices seem to be right on those too plus there shouldn’t be a compatibility issue .

Really appreciate the other two excellent reviews . Reading those and Costco’s usual excellent warrantee service on any other products I’ve taken back to them made the difference in my purchase . I was looking at Sony / Samsung models too , but the prices were still just a little too much and the specs on this Philips were excellent for the money so I decided to bite the bullet and join the world of HDTV sooner rather than later .

Happy with this TV – Caleb C. Frase – Cold Point, SC
I bought this TV because it was the biggest that would fit in
my Dad’s entertainment center. I had already bought a Samsung that only
worked for an hour.
My only complaint is that this TV has such a realistic picture
that you have to get used to how much different it looks, it is almost
as if you were there filming. My dad only has standard definition cable, but
I could tell a huge difference in quality of picture, and have not had any of the complaints of other people buying this TV. As far as I have seen this TV has had the best picture of any I have used, being enclosed in the TV cabinet the volume is usually needed to be higher than normal to hear as the speakers are behind the TV, but no problems. My dad loves this new TV and I wish my phillips 32″ (720p) would have fit in his cabinet, so that I could have keep it for myself, oh well, sadly I paid the same thing for my 720p Phillips two years ago, As I turned them on side by side, and the 120 hz 1080p blew it away even with standard cable. Wow, 120hz is AWESOME!!!
I shopped around, and amazon had the lowest price, and shipping was as expected. Thanks Amazon, you did me good on this one!

Best 32″ 1080p HDTV – Simon – Chicago, IL
I don’t normally write reviews for any of the products I purchase but felt the need to say something about this TV which thus far has been one of my most satisfying 0+ purchases. For starters, there are not too many 1080p 32″ TVs out there. Most are 720p and yet cost just as much as this Philips, if not more. I am simply amazed with the quality of the picture and even the sound from the rear facing speakers. My PS3 games look fantastic on this 120Hz screen. There are 4 HDMI inputs which is plenty for many. All settings are a breeze to adjust. Cant go wrong with this TV and thus far, Philips has not disappointed me as my DVD player and several other components are from them also. No need to pay the premium for Sony or Samsung.
